Over 30 varieties of bamboo
There are approximately 1,600 bamboo varieties worldwide. Over 400 different varieties are currently cultivated in Europe, 300 of which are temperate bamboos.

Phyllostachys
Tall bamboos with leptomorphic (running) rhizomes. The most important group for plantation forestry and timber production in Europe. In southern Europe — Spain, Italy and Portugal — these bamboos can reach their original height of over 20 metres, while in western Europe they grow up to 10 metres.

Fargesia
Medium to tall bamboos with pachymorphic (clumping) rhizomes. These are non-invasive bamboos, making them ideal for gardens where running rhizomes are unwanted. The group includes Thamnocalamus, Drepanostachyum and Yushania. Extremely cold-hardy varieties available.

Sasa
Small to tall bamboos with leptomorphic rhizomes. This diverse group includes Sasaella, Pseudosasa, Pleioblastus, Indocalamus, Bashania and Phyllosasa. Ideal as ground cover under trees, for borders, and for covering mounds.

Dendrocalamus
Giant tropical clumping bamboos with pachymorphic rhizomes. Among the largest bamboos in the world, prized for heavy-duty timber, construction, and biomass. Native to South and Southeast Asia, they thrive in warm climates and are widely cultivated across India, Thailand, and southern China. Not cold-hardy — suitable only for frost-free or minimally frosty regions of southern Europe.

Bambusa
Large tropical and subtropical clumping bamboos with pachymorphic rhizomes. The most diverse bamboo genus, containing hundreds of species used for construction, hedging, shoots, and ornamental planting. Non-invasive due to their clumping habit. Suited to mild and warm climates; only marginally hardy in the warmest parts of southern Europe.
