Bamboo in Europe

A rich European heritage

Bamboos from China and Japan were first introduced to Europe in the early 1800s. By the turn of the century, over 100 different bamboo varieties — mostly temperate varieties — were already known. Europe's first bamboo gardens were established and the plant became recognised as a beautiful exotic garden species. Very fast it seemed a decorative and useful material for the production of furniture, fish rods and other utilities.

In the 21st century, we are witnessing an enormous growth of "bambuism". Today, more than 400 different bamboo varieties are cultivated in Europe. In southern Europe — Spain, Italy and Portugal — bamboos can reach a height of over 20 metres, while in other western Europe they grow up to 12 metres.

Shoots become poles and reach their maximum height and diameter in a single growing season — you can almost watch them grow.

Main nursery of the Bamboologic network

BambooLogic is a Dutch company who is pioneering the European bamboo value chain from 'plant to customer'. Plant propagation takes place in Galicia, Spain and in our second nursery in Belgium. Our team's bamboo experience goes back to the 1980s when founding father Jan Oprins bought his first bamboo plants. The last decades we cooperated in more than 25,000 hectares of bamboo field installations globally.

Why bamboo

The sustainable supercrop

Fastest renewable commodity

Once mature bamboo grows it full lenght in 3 months, every year again. Once planted, it can be harvested for over 100 years. That's why it can produce about 15 times more timber than a traditional forest. Ideal to fuel the green EU industry.

Carbon capture champion

Tens of tonnes of CO₂ per hectare per year depending on varieties, climate, management etc. Well-managed bamboo fields sequester more than natural bamboo forests.

Sustainable bio-based material

Tens of thousands of applications. Present in almost every EU household. Stronger than steel by weight. A versatile alternative to wood, plastic, PVC, composite and cotton.

Regenerative agriculture

No replanting needed — bamboo regrows from its root system. Low avaerage water requirements, no pesticides, thrives on degraded land and makes the soil better.
